Summer Visitors: The Intersection of Art and Learning

Octavia Project

STEP K-12

City Growers

In an ongoing effort to share knowledge of natural dye processes, the Garden Crew welcomed several groups of students during the summer of 2024, each from a local arts and/or nature based program;  City Growers, Octavia Project and Pratt Institute’s NYSED Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP). (more)

During their visits, students participated in guided tours of the garden, learning about various plants and their roles not only as dye sources but also as pollinators and bioaccumulators. The historical context of the plants is central to the garden project, and the crew enhances their own understanding as they interact with visiting groups.

Students engaged in practical experimentation with dyeing and paint-making, following each step from plant to finished product. These hands-on activities and discussions helped both students and instructors gain a deeper appreciation for the artistic and practical aspects of dyeing.

Overall, the Pratt Dye Garden offers a valuable opportunity to explore how our mission intersects with those of visiting programs, merging education and creativity while promoting sustainable practices. By engaging with the garden’s natural dye processes, visitors are inspired to connect with the environment in new and imaginative ways. This hands-on experience not only deepens their understanding of dyeing and sustainability but also sparks ideas for integrating natural materials into various creative endeavors. The garden fosters a sense of connectedness between art, nature, and community, encouraging participants to envision new possibilities for creative expression and environmental stewardship.
