The Textile Dye Garden at Pratt is seeking applicants for work study employment for SUMMER 2024, with an opportunity for rehiring in the Fall and Spring 2025 work periods*
The Dye Garden is housed in Cannoneer Court and consists of 10 large garden beds and surrounding meadow where we cultivate plants used in natural dyeing, eco printing and paint making processes. The garden serves as a teaching resource and laboratory, integrating with the Institute at large to host tours, workshops, events and open workdays.
This is an in-person job, work study students must commit to a minimum schedule of 15 hours per week, June - August (vactions can be scheduled). Hours will be scheduled collaboratively to accommodate classes, work and internship commitments. Some flexibility is required as the cultivation and care of the plants is our main priority, with public access to the garden our second priority.
During the Fall the Garden Crew will spend time weeding, harvesting and extracting dye for use in workshops (indigo dyeing, eco-printing, printing/painting with dyes, paint making,etc) and special projects.
They will host open hours, and support workshops and events. Students will gain knowledge and experience in working with dyes.
General role requirements:
Commit to the maintenance and success of the garden
Creatively problem solve
Work collaboratively with crew and faculty leads
Have knowledge of, or the ability to learn, how to tend the garden
Have a strong interest in learning about Natural Dye plants
Continue documentation of the 2024 growing season for record keeping and promotional purposes
Communicate in a timely manner, through emails and a group text
Take initiative in suggesting and leading projects, workshops and collaborations
Summer hiring role: 15 hours per week (schedule tbd):
Be physically able to water, garden, weed, harvest and sort yield during assigned 4 hour shifts
Attend mandatory 1 hour meetings once a week (contingent on final hires/availability) via Zoom or in person, this time is used for review and general information sharing.
Prepare for and staff workshops and events on Saturdays and Sundays and the occasional weekday
