Oil Paint Recipe
Materials: Tempered glass slab, glass muller, paint tube, sieve, palette knife, mortar & pestle.
Pigment used for swatch: Bee balm lake pigment (LC).
Ingredients
2 tsp lake pigment powder
2 tsp linseed oil
1/4 tsp melted beeswax *optional
Paint Making Steps
1. Grind down 2 tsp pigment in a mortar and pestle to avoid clumps. Then strain the pigment through a sieve onto a tempered glass slab.
2. Add oil to the glass slab and use a glass muller to blend oil and pigment together in circular motions until the mixture is smooth with little to no grit. About 20 - 30 mins of mulling.
3. Add thickener like melted beeswax if necessary to reduce the runniness of the formula. Start with 1/4 tsp and add more beeswax in small increments as needed. When mixing in the beeswax mull as usual.
4 . Scrape the paint into a paint tube. Detailed instructions are included on the storing paint page in our downloadable pdf.
Note: The Hollyhock, Cosmos, Coreopsis, and Black-eyed Susan lake pigments came from full-concentration (FC) dye baths while all other swatches were made from leftover dye baths at low concentration (LC).
